Maternal and child healthcare in ayurveda

Do’s: -
Diet can be decided as per taste and available resources.
Liquid/semi-liquid are beneficial in early pregnancy.
- Include Milk and milk products for fetal nourishment and strength.
- Fresh fruits and vegetable especially high in iron are advised.
- Folic acid rich food like whole grains are recommended.
- Protein-rich soup, veg or non-veg as per habit, is good for the expecting mother.
- Madhu (honey) and Sarkara (Sugar) are beneficial for the health of baby and mother. But diabetic mothers should take caution.
- Remaining cheerful has immense benefits to the mother and child.
- Must aim to sleep for 8 hours in the night. An additional 2 hours during the day is advised.
- Self-hygiene should be a priority.
- Wear comfortable clothes which are not tight- fitting.
- Perform normal routine work, avoiding strain on the body.
- Visit the doctor at regular intervals.
- Family members should be supportive and keep pleasant behavior with Expecting mothers.
Don’ts: -
It is recommended to avoid very hot, very cold and stale food items. - Excessively spicy, pungent, sour, salty, sweet food items are best avoided.
- Should not eat any food item that can cause allergy, or is known to upset the expecting mother's health.
- Should resist any tendency to overeat.
- It advisable to avoid excessive intake of tea or coffee.
- Remaining thirsty or hungry for a long time is not advised.
- It is recommended to avoid lying down immediately after food.
- Standing for long hours is not advised, especially from the second trimester onwards.
- It's recommended to avoid heavy work, jumping, jerks and running. - Smoking (or use of tobacco in any form), alcohol and intoxicating drugs are to be strictly avoided.
- Avoid self-medication.
